French Farm Animals: 17 Animals with Example Sentences

The main French farm animals are la vache (cow), le cochon (pig), le cheval (horse), l'âne (donkey), le mouton (sheep), la chèvre (goat), la poule (hen), le coq (rooster), le canard (duck), l'oie (goose) and le lapin (rabbit). Most have three separate words for the male, the female and the young: le taureau, la vache, le veau.

Farm animals are one of the first vocabulary sets children learn in French, and they are just as useful for adults: they are concrete, they are everywhere in songs, idioms and children's books, and they carry a lot of grammar quietly.

Every sentence below uses the animal with a real verb, because a noun learned alone is a noun you will not produce in conversation.

The male, the female and the young

French almost never reuses one word with a masculine and feminine ending here. Each is a separate word, and this is where learners lose marks.

The sounds they make

Animal noises are not universal, they are conventions of each language, and French has its own. These come up constantly in songs and with children.

Two grammar points hiding in the list

Le cheval becomes les chevaux in the plural. Nouns ending in -al almost all do this: un animal, des animaux, un journal, des journaux. It is irregular in English terms but perfectly regular in French, and it is worth learning as a pattern rather than as seven separate exceptions.

La vache mange de l'herbe uses the partitive article, which has no English equivalent. De l'herbe means some grass, an unspecified quantity. You cannot drop it the way English does: la vache mange herbe is not a sentence. Du, de la, de l' and des are compulsory.

Frequently asked questions

How do you say farm animals in French?

Les animaux de la ferme. Note the plural of animal is animaux, following the same -al to -aux pattern as cheval and chevaux, journal and journaux.

What sound does a rooster make in French?

Cocorico. Animal sounds differ by language: the French cow says meuh, the duck says coin coin, the dog says ouaf ouaf and the donkey says hi han. Cocorico is also used as a patriotic exclamation, because the rooster is a symbol of France.

Why is the plural of cheval chevaux?

Nouns ending in -al form their plural in -aux: un cheval becomes des chevaux, un animal becomes des animaux, un journal becomes des journaux. A few keep a regular -s (des bals, des festivals, des carnavals), but they are the exception.

What is the difference between un mouton, une brebis and un agneau?

Un mouton is the generic sheep and also the meat. Une brebis is specifically the ewe, le bélier is the ram, and un agneau is the lamb. On a menu, mouton and agneau are different dishes.
