French Technology Vocabulary: 20 Words for Everyday Devices

The core French words for everyday technology are l'ordinateur (computer), le portable (mobile phone), la tablette (tablet), le chargeur (charger), le casque (headphones) and la clé USB (USB stick). Watch the gender of borrowed words: le wifi, le cloud and le mail are all masculine, while une appli (an app) is feminine.

Technology is one of the first things you talk about in a new language, because it is everywhere: your portable that will not charge, the wifi that keeps dropping, the mail you need to send. This poster is the twenty words that cover the devices around you every day, each with its article, so you learn le or la at the same time as the word.

The tricky part in French is not the objects, it is the gender of all the words borrowed from English. Le cloud, le wifi, le mail and le smartphone are masculine, but une appli and une story are feminine, and there is no rule, only habit. Learn each one with its article from the start and you save yourself a lot of guessing later.

Talking about your devices

A handful of verbs and phrases do most of the everyday work. These are the ones you actually say out loud when something needs turning on, charging or fixing.

Je n'ai pas de réseau.I have no signal.Dans le métro, je n'ai pas de réseau.

Two things worth knowing

Le portable means a mobile phone, short for le téléphone portable. Be careful, because un ordinateur portable is a laptop, so portable on its own is the phone and portable after ordinateur is the computer. For a landline you say le téléphone fixe.

Spoken French shortens technology words constantly: un ordi for un ordinateur, une appli for une application, un mail for un courriel, and la télé for la télévision. Recognising these clipped forms is half of understanding a French person talk about their devices.

Frequently asked questions

How do you say "phone" in French?

Le téléphone is the general word. A mobile is le portable or le téléphone portable, and a landline is le téléphone fixe. In casual speech many people just say mon tel. To make a call is téléphoner or appeler.

What is the difference between un ordinateur and un ordinateur portable?

Un ordinateur is a computer in general, and often means a desktop (un ordinateur de bureau). Un ordinateur portable is specifically a laptop, because portable means it can be carried. In everyday speech people shorten both to un ordi.

Is it le or la for French technology words?

It is mixed and you have to learn each one. Masculine: le cloud, le wifi, le mail, le smartphone, le casque, le chargeur. Feminine: la tablette, la télévision, la clé USB, la webcam, une appli. Words borrowed from English are usually masculine, but not always, so learn the article with the word.

How do you say "to charge your phone" in French?

Recharger son portable, or recharger son téléphone. You can also say mettre son téléphone à charger. The charger is le chargeur and the cable is le câble, and when it is nearly empty you say la batterie est faible.
